RMIT:ART:INTERSECT runs a dynamic set of art projects and events—from gallery exhibitions to residency programs and public art installations. Our team works with internal and external audiences and stakeholders to help close the distance between our School, our University, our city and the globe. Every semester we open up internship opportunities. The aim of this engagement is to provide individuals with a meaningful, quality and hands-on challenges that will further their career prospects and give them valuable experience in the arts industry. The internship has specifically been developed as a testing ground and learning space for budding professional artists and arts administrators.
The internship will run across the RMIT University semester period. It will entail approximately 4 to 8 hours of work per week and will include both on-site and self-directed work. The project will involve working with events, collections and exhibition installations and will also often give students opportunities to engage directly with guest artists as artist assistants. Further, interns will witness what happens behind the scenes—and be privy to the systems of project development and management in the cultural arts. While the galleries are flexible in their working times, some engagements will not be able to be moved, and it is advised that prospective interns have general availability on Thursday evenings. Further, it should be noted that gallery events are sometimes outside of normal business hours.
To be eligible you must have an interest and basic knowledge of contemporary art practice. This includes direct experience, transferable experience or relevant coursework. Please note that we will preference students who are enrolled in a relevant internship course where the intern can use this opportunity as their coursework placement (i.e. the Bachelor’s Internship course, the Advanced Diploma course or the Certificate IV course). Further please note that first priority will be given to RMIT School of Art current students and second priority to RMIT School of Art alumni and RMIT University students. If you have any question about eligibility or the coursework offerings, please contact RMIT:ART:INTERSECT, your teachers and/or your lecturers.
