RMIT:ART:INTERSECT manages six creative projects that together form a dynamic program of exhibitions, residencies, creative laboratories, talks and events. These projects consider and use contemporary art as a means of intersecting with and enriching our University community, as well as our broader local and global ones. They are PROJECT SPACE, SPARE ROOM, SITUATE, SITE EIGHT, the LIGHTSCAPES and SPEAKER. For more information regarding INTERSECT and its projects, please visit our About page.
The process for expressing interest to participate to in a INTERSECT project is different for each project, but the selection criteria that they will be assessed against is the same. This includes the following evenly weighted criteria:
Quality of Practice-based Research | Projects should be critical, innovative and contribute to contemporary cultural and social discourse.
Potential for Impact | Projects should consider their relevance and contribution to the INTERSECT Program, the School of Art, RMIT and broader audiences. Projects that promote a diversity of practice, voice and background and those which connect to the School's curriculum and research may be preferenced.
Feasibility| Projects should have the capacity for timely and quality delivery. Projects that are co-supported or co-hosted may be preferenced.
Each project has its own set of eligibility and timelines. This is important to note, as expressions of interest will not be considered if they are from ineligible individuals or if they are lodged too close to their proposed start date. Below is a list of projects by title (please note that the SITUATE project has been subdivided into Melbourne-based Residencies and International Residencies). For more details and eligibility, please select the project (or projects) below that you are interested in participating in.
Project Space and Spare Room are two adjacent galleries located on RMIT city campus. Further details regarding these galleries can be found on the About page or Project Space and Spare Room page.

SITUATE's Melbourne-based residencies include Teaching Residencies, Partnership Residencies and inbound Reciprocal Residencies. These residencies offer artists, curators and researchers the opportunity to engage with the School of Art and to pursue personal artistic or theoretical research. These residencies may be between 3 and 12 weeks in duration but are generally 8 weeks in length; actual timelines should be determined by the project. Melbourne-based residents may be provided access to various equipment and facilities of RMIT and the School of Art, such as a private artist studio, specialist equipment or workshops. Residents may also be invited to participate in exhibitions, seminars and publications in the School or with a partner. Please note that RMIT does not have on-campus accommodation, and so accomodation plans must be considered for individuals who are not local. Further details regarding Teaching Residencies, Partnership Residencies and inbound Reciprocal Residencies can be found on the About page.
