In early 2018 Tisna Sanjaya engaged in a month-long residency at the School of Art, culminating in an exhibition in the RMIT School of Art at SITE EIGHT gallery space.
Tisna Sanjaya is one of Indonesia’s leading contemporary artists. He was born in 1958 in Bandung, West Java, and currently lives and works in Bandung. Tisna majored in printmaking at the Bandung Institute of Technology, from which he graduated in 1986 at a time of political and social unrest. He holds a Diploma and Masters of Fine Art from the Braunschweig University of Art (Germany) and a PhD from the ISI JOGJA (Indonesia). Tisna has exhibited works in a number of major exhibitions and venues across the world, including but not limited to the Venice Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Jakarta Biennale, Asia-Pacific Triennale, Singapore Biennale, Yogyakarta Biennale, Musee Palais de Tokyo and the National Gallery Jakarta.
For Tisna, art gains its greatest legitimacy through a direct connection with the lives of the people. He uses painting, etching as well as activism and performance to consider environment, politics and religion. His projects regularly profile and unpack the challenges being faced by Indonesia and our global community.
This SITUATE Residency was a three-way partnership between RMIT, Multicultural Arts Victoria and Project 11.
