SITUATE / May to August 2018
Penelope Moye is a recipient of the 2018 Honours Travelling Scholarships, an award generously supported by RMIT University School of Art. Penelope plans to travel to the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Italy to undertake research focused on the initiation of a project at the intersection of art and psychoanalysis. The intended travel will allow Penelope to develop and deepen her research into the confluence of psychoanalytic theory and processes and her art practice. As she intends to continue studying and practicing in both areas, the trip will allow Penelope to visit and investigate the prominent institutions of art and psychoanalysis in Europe where it may be possible to continue her studies at a post-graduate level.
Penelope is an artist living in Melbourne who has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her expanded practice includes wall works, objects, and text-based works. Her practice is underpinned by the understanding that art exists in the realms of discourse and that discourse is contingent and relative to subjects. As such, her art objects mediate an experience between the subject and their desire through an inherently participatory process. In using interruptive technologies like ready-made objects, her hope is to resist an excess of representation, communication and fixed meaning whilst placing questions of subjectivity in relation to social forms.
