SITUATE / 16 September to 26 October 2019
KBT (Kieran Boland and Brie Trenerry) are the 2019 recipients of the Taiwanese Arts Residency.
A Taiwanese friend provided the inspiration for our project, You say Phonetic, I say Fanatic. She insists she learnt English by watching only three films over and over again. The films were Fight Club (1999) Trainspotting (1996) and Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) . She watched them fanatically to learn the language phonetically. Curiously, all films shared a reactionary, counter-cultural theme. Some may even say they represent a decline in western culture.
In response, we are reinterpreting scenes from three Taiwanese films A Brighter Summer Day (1991) The Puppetmaster (1993) The Wayward Cloud (2005) as the basis of a film we are making. Through this activity; we’re interested in what else we can we share and learn beyond language. In doing so we acknowledge that our perspective is an outsider’s vision. We have never worked with Chinese language before but are enjoying the challenge!
This residency is a partnership between SITUATE and the Taiwan National University of the Arts / Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts (KdMoFa).
