SITUATE / 1 March to 24 May 2019 at Leipzig International Artist Residency Program (LIA), Leipzig, Germany
Jordan Grant is the recipient of the 2019 studio residency award and will be travelling to the Leipzig International Art Programme (LIA), located in the historic and thriving Spinnerei art complex in Leipzig, Germany. Jordan’s residency will conclude with a solo exhibition at the Australian Embassy in Berlin.
Jordan Grant’s paintings develop through a heuristic process bent on doubt-laden experimentation and tentativity. Abstract compositions are formed through gestures that are both actual or authentic, as well as indexical; signifying marks from within the Western history of painting and those ancillary to it. These references, ranging from early 20th century painting to comics and graffiti, elicit a precarious harmony fostered through the use of active and shifting forms. These archeologies make the atemporal nature of our relationship to visual culture explicit, and highlight a contemporaneity where spaces of conflicting visual information and complex, networked semiotic relationships are the norm.
This award is generously supported by NKN Gallery (Melbourne), Blockprojects (Melbourne), the Leipzig International Art Programme, the Australian Embassy in Berlin and the RMIT School of Art.
