Vestiges

After water, sand is the most extracted natural material by humans, our society is built on it (quite literally) and contrary to what is thought, it is also a limited material whose extraction from the bottom of rivers and oceans is causing irreparable damages in nature. The interdisciplinary project Vestiges investigates the insatiable demand of sand, as well as its socio-political and environmental consequences. More specifically, “Vestiges” will focus on Victoria’s landscape, and this region’s sand mining history. What can the use of sand tell us about the relationship between humankind and nature?

Bio
Enar de Dios Rodríguez is an artist from Spain living and working in Austria. Graduated in Translation and Fine Arts, de Dios Rodríguez’s interdisciplinary work includes photography, video, websites, poetry, installations and drawings. In her research-based artistic practice, she examines the relationship between existing texts and images, facts and fictions, and their documentation. Interested in the idea of uncreativity, she re-configures extant pieces of visual and textual information in which the selective process and the analysis of the context serve as a starting point for an exploration of the poetic and its political applicability. Her role as an artist strives to instigate reflection on alternative imaginaries, to dislocate fixed structures and unlock new meanings. Her work has been exhibited at the Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco), Künstlerhaus (Viena), Laznia Centre for Contemporary Art (Gdańsk), or in festival such as L’OEil d’Oodaaq (Nantes) and Ars Electronica (Linz). She has been the recipient of the Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Award (San Francisco), the BMWF Scholarship (Vienna), or the Creadores Residency Grant (Málaga). She has given talks at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, the University of California, Berkeley or Stanford University.
