SPARE ROOM / 20 May to 30 June 2016
Doublethink explores the concept of ‘black’ or ‘white’ identities for First Nations Aboriginal people and considers this process of defining identity as a conceptual colonisation. Paton examines the associated behaviours and mindsets that align with these predefined identities and social constructs. Doublethink considers the use of the term ‘Aboriginal’ and its connotations through the notions of power, control and social systems. By looking at contemporary histories and recent cross-cultural practice, Paton reflects on complex issues of language, colonisation and socio-political constructs in order to question the future for First Nations Australians.
