Matthys Gerber is a Sydney-based painter born in the Netherlands in 1956.
Since the 1980’s his work has addressed contemporary painting practice using a large array of techniques, styles and subjects. His attitude has been instrumental in adapting the various historical modernist tropes as ready-mades towards an open and free method of investigating the possibilities of painting.
Always working against any essentialism of the medium, Gerber’s concentration is more on the ‘all inclusiveness’ of anything that can and cannot be connected as “Painting”, and thereby also expanding the boundaries and limits of the artist as the only constant subject.
