SITE EIGHT / 26 to 30 September 2011
Melanie Yazzie has invited a diverse range of printmakers and print-based artists from around the globe to participate in an international exchange portfolio entitled Circle of Print. For this project Yazzie encouraged artists to consider the fold as a premise or thematic for their work.
This exhibition is part of the Print Council of Australia's Month of Print.

Circle of Print—an international group of printmakers—was organized while I attended IMPACT 6 in Bristol, United Kingdom in2009. It grew from the excellent printmakers I met from around the conference. There are well-known printmaking leaders in the mix and there are also wonderful up-and-coming artists that I feel will soon join the pack of printmaking leaders. This conjures the idea that some were at IMPACT 6 in spirit!
My goal in making print exchanges happen is to connect people by way of their work and it is my hope that one day everyone will meet. The goal of seeing our printmaking world as one big circle is what this project was focused on. I have had some health scares in the past couple of years and it has been a growing focus of mine to connect friends and people I greatly admire together through these projects. I feel that each of the people in this project are people who should have a voice at these important events. So in a sense they are present at IMPACT 7 with their works making a speech through this exhibition! Those who can be physically present at IMPACT 7 will be representatives for us all!
All the works are 20 inches by 8 inches in size and fold down to 8 inches by 10 inches to fit into the collection boxes. The works are full of surprises and are excellent examples of why our print conferences and print exchanges must take place! I want to thank all the artists for participating.
Following IMPACT 6: International Multidisciplinary Printmaking Conference held in Bristol UK in 2009, Associate Professor of Art Melanie Yazzie from the University of Colorado (Boulder, USA) invited a diverse range of printmakers and print-based artists from the USA and around the globe to participate in an exchange portfolio titled Circle of Print: FOLD. This international exchange portfolio consists of four volumes, which were distributed amongst the participants.
As the Project Curator and Coordinator, Melanie set the parameters of the project as the premise FOLD—encouraging participating printmedia artists to consider the definition and nuance of the fold and explore and play with and the act of bending paper. This exhibition offers the unique opportunity to view all four volumes at the RMIT School of Art Gallery in conjunction with IMPACT7 during the Print Council of Australia's Month of Print.
